"One of the things we do is monitor
broadcast signals... We listen
to your journalism, your music,
your humor... try to better
understand you as a people..." - "First Contact," Star Trek: The Next GenerationIn Star Trek, before the Federation makes contact with a new civilization, they monitor that society's media on the premise that the products of a civilization's mind and culture reveal who they are as a people and how they think. This is particularly true of humans: we are storytelling animals, and our narratives reveal who we are as people while shaping the world around us. They imbue every sphere of our existence, and this blog is an academic's - and a geek's- exploration of the stories told by the media and of the culture around it. It explores the way science, technology, media, and fandom come together through narrative to both reflect and shape our world. This is a coming together that happens most interestingly and tellingly in the realm of science fiction, which this blog has a particular focus on. And perhaps, when the aliens come, we'll have a slightly better understanding of our human civilization.
Join me as I explore strange new worlds, seek out new stories and new ideas, and boldy go where no geek has gone before. And if you wish to make contact, please feel free to write to me here.
